Teen shot in N.J. escapes on scooter, treated at hospital, police say

A 17-year-old was shot in Roselle Sunday morning but was able to escape on a scooter, authorities said.

When police arrived at the scene of the shooting in the area of West 2nd Avenue and Locust Street around 10:30 a.m., they found that the teen had already fled, according to Roselle Police Chief Helder Freire.

The male teen, who was not identified, was later located and transported by emergency medical personnel to University Hospital in Newark, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Freire said.

The shooting is still under investigation by the Roselle Police Department and Freire said no arrests were made as of Monday afternoon.

The chief said the shooting does not appear to be random and there is no threat to public safety.

Anyone who may have been in the area of West 2nd Ave and Locust St around the time of the incident, or who may have seen or heard anything unusual was asked to contact the Roselle Police Department Detective Bureau at 908-245-9200 and ask to speak with Detective Julissa Medina, the lead investigator assigned to the case.
