An extreme heat warning has been issued for most of New Jersey, with temperatures expected to reach the mid to upper 90s and potentially approach 100 degrees through Tuesday, creating dangerous heat conditions for residents.

The forecast for Saturday calls for clear skies, sun and temperatures right around 90 degrees for much of the state before the heat escalates into next week.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for northern and central New Jersey counties from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Sunday’s high temperatures are expected in the mid to upper 90s, with cooler conditions along the Jersey Shore.

Heat advisories, a step lower than extreme heat warnings, have been issued for Monday and Tuesday in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Salem and coastal areas of Monmouth and Ocean.

“We are currently forecasting four consecutive days of 95+ with Monday and Tuesday likely to feature high temperatures around 100 and heat index values pushing 110 degrees,” the weather service said in its Saturday forecast discussion.

Those are likely to be the hottest temperatures parts of the state have seen in more than a decade, the weather service said.

Residents should take extreme caution during this period of intense heat.

The weather service recommends staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on vulnerable populations like elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning.

Nighttime temperatures will offer little relief, with lows remaining in the 70s.

The heat is expected to persist through Tuesday, with some potential relief by Wednesday as a cold front approaches.

There is some uncertainty about the exact timing and impact of the approaching cold front, which may bring a slight chance of showers late Wednesday.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to gradually moderate towards the end of the week, with highs potentially dropping closer to 90 degrees.
