You’ve had pizza for dinner. Now you can have it for dessert.

Brother Bruno’s Pizza has been a Wayne institution since 1976. But while the shop has old-school credentials, it is home to some very unconventional pizzas.

The Passaic County shop offers 40 different dessert pizza options every day with flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, mint fudge brownie, pretzel salted caramel and Samoa Girl Scout cookie among several others.

Owner Pietro Mazzella bought the pizzeria from his dad and uncle in 2013 and moved the pizzeria from its original 140 Hamburg Turnpike location.

Back in 2015, Mazzella found himself craving French toast all the time. Rather than simply make the classic breakfast dish, he decided to make it on a pizza. He took chopped French toast, brown sugar, cinnamon and a cream cheese icing and put it on classic pizza dough.

Customers loved it. After that, one customer asked for a s’mores pie. Then came a request for red velvet, followed by another for birthday cake.

Soon Brother Bruno’s dessert pies were a hit with local college students.

“Students from William Paterson University walked in and they said, can you put all four on one pizza? “Mazzella said. ”I said, ‘Listen, I’ll do it, but you can’t post this on social media. I can’t mass-produce these pies.’”

And sure enough, the dessert Franken-pizza made it on social media. Soon enough, lines were out their door asking for the four-flavored dessert pizza.

Now customers can order “the sampler,” a large dessert pie with four different flavors.

While the official name of the restaurant is still Brother Bruno’s Pizza, Mazzella has dubbed his eatery the "#TheCheatMealHeadquarters" on social media — a nod to the over-the-top sweet creations on the menu.

I recently stopped in to try the legendary dessert pies and was instantly overwhelmed by the sheer number of flavors. With 40 dessert options on the menu, there’s bound to be something for everyone.

Bruno Brother’s offers three size options — personal ($15), small ($23), and large ($25). I opted for the sampler pizza, which comes with four different dessert toppings, to taste a mix of the shop’s most popular flavors.

The “Cookie Monster” flavor layered blue vanilla icing with chocolate chip cookie dough, crumbled Oreos and a swirl of Nutella. The “Blueberry Crumble” started with cream cheese icing and was topped with blueberries, crumb cake and a dusting of powdered sugar.

The “Slutty Brownie” went all in with a Nutella base, loaded with chocolate chip cookie dough, brownies, and crushed Oreos, and was finished with cream cheese icing and rainbow sprinkles. Finally, the “Birthday Cake” was dotted with chunks of Funfetti cookie dough, ribboned with cream cheese icing and topped with rainbow sprinkles.

I don’t have the biggest sweet tooth, but for those who do, this is pure dessert heaven. Even with my more reserved palate, the bites I took were indulgent, well-balanced, and definitely crave-worthy. They use the same dough as the regular pizzas, which works surprisingly well — if the dough was sweeter, it would make this sugary beast cloying.

Brother Bruno’s may be known for their traditional pies, but it’s their wild, over-the-top dessert pizzas that leave a lasting impression. The dessert pies are messy, playful and absolutely worth the cheat meal.
