ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith is name-dropping again.
However, his latest flex may end up backfiring if his comments reach his alleged old texting buddy and well-known egomaniac — President Donald Trump.
While briefing Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” on how Trump’s failure to buy the Buffalo Bills in 2014 may have morphed Trump into a two-term president, Smith divulged one embarrassing detail.
“He was putting the word out that if this doesn’t happen — he wanted to do it, and this should happen. ‘I’m Donald Trump, I’m very popular and well known. I’m worth over a billion dollars, I should be able to purchase an NFL team if I want it,’” Smith said.
But, here’s the kicker: “And if I can’t get it, it’s because they’re getting in my way. That was his position. Their position was, ‘You didn’t have enough money.’”
Meanwhile, Smith and Trump crossover politically.
While being interviewed at the NAB Show in Las Vegas two months ago, Smith revealed the pressure he’s received to run for president once Trump leaves office due to Smith’s strong polling numbers.
“Over the last few weeks, I’ve had no choice but to get more serious about it,” said Smith via Barrett Media. “I’ve been approached by people on Capitol Hill. I’ve been approached by people who are elected officials in office, whether it’s governors or mayors or what have you. People have legitimately, seriously, asked me about it.”
While running the country may not have been on Smith’s Bingo card, the longtime journalist and full-time debater found the calls to action tough to ignore.
“I have no desire to be a politician, but I’ve decided that I’m no longer going to close that door,” he said. “I’m gonna keep my options open. I’m going to entertain the possibility.”
Smith considered running as he kept a close eye on Trump and his chainsaw-wielding government shake-up. But, recently, Smith has strayed from the concept, despite receiving a soft endorsement from Trump himself.
“I wasn’t looking for any kind of endorsement from anybody, especially him,” Smith said. “But he is the president of the United States. There’s a bit of flattery that comes with getting such words from the man who holds the highest office in the land, and I can appreciate that. But in the same breath, I’m saying to myself, ‘You know what, evidently I have no chance,’ because if someone like that is throwing out my name, clearly they think that, ‘Yeah, go ahead and do it so we can beat you. We can romp you, too.’
“So I’m not falling for it. It was nice to hear and I appreciated it, but obviously, it is what it is. I hear where he’s coming from, but I wasn’t thinking about it any more seriously than that.”
