Lee Joo-Sil, an actress join best for her role in “Squid Game,” has died. She was 81.
The actress went into cardiac arrest Sunday at her home in South Korea, according to national paper The Chosun Ilbo. She was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
Joo-Sil played the role of Park Mal Soon, mom of undercover detective Hwang Joon-Ho and stepmother of Hwang In Ho, in the second season of Netflix’s hit thriller series. The second season of the critically-acclaimed series release this past December.
Her death comes just three months after Joo-Sil was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
She was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer 30 years ago and given only one year to live. She battled for 13 years before being cleared of the cancer.
The actress’ career kicked off in 1964 and spanned over six decades, starring in productions of “Death of a Salesman,” “Macbeth,” “The Uncanny Counter,” “Country Diaries” and “Train to Busan.”
Joo-Sil also got a doctorate degree in Public Health from Wonkwang University in 2010.
