Grammy-winning singer Gregory Porter will bring his smooth mix of jazz, soul, and gospel to New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Prudential Hall this month.

Fans can expect a powerful, heartfelt performance with a few surprises along the way from the artist best known for songs like "Holding On" and "It Dont Matter."

Renowned for his rich voice and inspiring lyrics, Porter says the hall’s great acoustics and intimate setting make each show feel special.

Ahead of the Prudential North to Shore event on June 29, Mosaic caught up with the artist to talk music, inspirations, and messages:

Q: You’re performing at NJPAC’s Prudential Hall on June 29. What can fans expect?

A: I see myself as a musical messenger, using music to express consistent themes that are important to me. Specifically, love in its many forms, including romantic, familial, and love for people, places, and country, is important to me. Regardless of what record I release, the message remains fresh and rooted in optimism and emotional connection.

Q: Your blend of jazz, soul, and gospel has resonated with audiences around the world. How do you approach balancing those influences in a live performance?

A: I tailor my setlist like a DJ, adjusting it based on the audience, venue, current events, and the message I want to convey. Regardless of the selection, my music consistently reflects the full spectrum of Black musical traditions like jazz, soul, blues, and gospel.

Q: You’ve won two Grammys and have been hailed as one of the most important jazz voices of your generation. How do you stay grounded and inspired creatively?

A: I stay grounded by holding on to my mother’s advice and maintaining a sense of humility, as I’m often surprised by my own success. Rather than chasing fame or materialism, my focus is on creating soulful, authentic music rooted in real-life experiences.

Q: Prudential Hall is known for its incredible acoustics and intimate atmosphere. How does the venue influence your performance style?

A: I prefer mid-sized venues because they have a nice balance of intimacy and scale that allows for a stronger connection with the audience. A beautiful setting enhances the performance and helps amplify my message most times.

Q: Looking back at your musical journey, from your early days to now, what moment stands out as especially defining for you as an artist?

A: I’m proud that my music is rooted in humanity and humility. It resonates with audiences around the world - even those who don’t speak the language. The goal is always to reach people of all backgrounds with a soulful, universal message about love, respect, and connection.

Q: Your lyrics often carry messages of hope, love, and social awareness. How do you see the role of music, especially jazz, in today’s cultural climate?

A: I see jazz as a powerful way to express deep emotions and truth, especially about the Black experience. I believe it has always stood up for justice and given a voice to the oppressed if you know what I mean.

Q: For younger artists who see you as a role model, what advice would you give about staying authentic while navigating the music industry?

A: Young singers should use their own life stories in their music because it makes them special. Mixing personal experiences with their style will help them find their own unique voice – like I did.

The event begins at 3 p.m. at Prudential Hall, 1 Center St. in Newark. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com.
