If you had an inkling that James Blunt’s hit single, “You’re Beautiful” (2005) is a little bit on the creepy side, the British singer confirmed such.
In a post to his personal X account, Blunt, 51, celebrated the song’s 20th anniversary. In 2005, the music from the singer’s debut album, “Back to Bedlam,” topped the charts in ten countries, including the United States. He showed off his house, which earnings from the song paved the way for him to purchase. Blunt also revealed the rather bonkers meaning behind his most successful song.
“20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house,” Blunt said in a video of him walking through his front door. “Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else’s girlfriend, would resonate quite so much?”
In 2020, Blunt also explored how fans resonated with the story behind the song in an essay for The Guardian, noting how disjointed it felt from his actual inspiration for writing it.
“It’s always been portrayed as romantic, but it’s actually a bit creepy, Blunt noted. “It’s about a guy (me) who’s high and stalking someone else’s girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder: “What if I’d said something?”
