Another nationwide protest against President Donald Trump is happening on Saturday, and more than two dozen demonstrations are planned across the Garden State.
“No Kings Day,” a call for protests against Trump’s policies, is planned for June 14, the president’s 79th birthday. It’s also the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Army.
Protests are scheduled around the time of Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C., which is expected to include over 6,000 soldiers and hundreds of military vehicles, the Associated Press reported.
The protests are being organized by a coalition of advocacy organizations, progressive groups and nonprofit entities and are being held amid increased criticism over Trump’s use of the U.S. military in Los Angeles, where demonstrations against ICE raids in the city have been held for many days.
Rallies against ICE, the federal agency that enforces immigration laws, are also taking place in other large cities across the nation.
Where in New Jersey?
Rallies and demonstrations are planned at various points across New Jersey throughout the day June 14, according to a website listing the events.
In North Jersey, protests are listed across areas of Middlesex, Somerset, Union, and Essex counties, in municipalities that include Piscataway, Bridgewater, North Plainfield, Rahway and Newark.
Farther south, protests are scheduled in places such as Haddonfield and Woolwich townships. Others at the Jersey Shore are planned in Asbury Park, Toms River, Atlantic City, Ocean City and Middle Township.
What is No Kings Day
The moniker is used to designate a day of opposition to the Trump administration’s policies. Organizers cite Trump’s actions on immigration and curtailing government spending as reasons behind the call for protest.
The 50501 Movement, a nonprofit political organization, is behind the calls for protest. The organization did not immediately return a request by NJ Advance Media for information about how many have signed up for events.
“No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance,” according to the organization’s website. “From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like."
The nonprofit also inspired Hands Off! and May Day, which were day of protests against Trump earlier this year. Over 20 protests took place April 5 as part of Hands Off! in municipalities that included Union City, Bridgewater, Metuchen and Hopewell.
Notably, the May Day mass protests included a rally at Princeton University for worker’s rights.
