A brother and sister who endured years of sexual abuse in foster homes in the late 1960s and early 1970s will share a $19.5 million settlement from the state of New Jersey, their attorney announced Wednesday.
The victims sued the Division of Child Protection and Permanency for its “grossly negligent, reckless and/or willful and wanton failures” that jeopardized their safety and mental health.
The brother, who lives in California, and his sister who lives in New Jersey, sued in state Superior Court in Middlesex County in 2022, based on a law Gov. Phil Murphy signed that expanded the statute of limitations for victims of sexual assault, allowing them to sue their abusers and the public and nonprofit entities who employed them.
