N.J. man charged with fatally striking pedestrian, authorities say

A North Brunswick man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that took place Saturday night in New Brunswick, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Juan Martinez-Gaspar, 41, of North Brunswick is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash for a Saturday night crash that killed Elvia Gavarrete, 48, of New Brunswick, the office said.

At approximately 10:41 p.m. on Saturday, New Brunswick police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Lee Street and Suydam Street and found a woman with serious injuries.

The woman, Gavarrete, died at a short time later at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The driver left the scene, the prosecutors’s office said.

Investigators identified the vehicle that struck Gavarrete as a pickup truck and connected it to Martinez-Gaspar of North Brunswick. Investigators later found the vehicle consistent with damage from a pedestrian impact, the prosecutor’s office said.

Martinez-Gaspar was arrested and charged with second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
