Man stabbed N.J. resident, led police on pursuit through 3 towns, authorities say

A North Carolina man was arrested Monday after he allegedly stabbed a Somerset County resident and then led police on a pursuit through three towns.

Officers were called to Willow Run Lane in Montgomery Township shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Monday and found a resident who had been stabbed in the shoulder and abdomen, according to a statement from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

The man who was stabbed was taken to an area hospital and underwent emergency surgery, the office said. He is expected to survive.

Witnesses were able to provide dispatchers with a description of a man in a red SUV who fled the area after the stabbing. This information was relayed to officers from the Montgomery Township Police Department, investigators said.

Police located the SUV on County Route 533, but when they tried to stop the vehicle the driver, identified Wednesday as Brian Pyke, 65, of Calabash, North Carolina, refused to stop, the office said.

Police pursued the vehicle into Princeton and South Brunswick where Pyke was ultimately apprehended and arrested, authorities said. During the pursuit, Pyke struck a Montgomery Township Police vehicle, but none of the officers involved were injured.

Pyke was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries sustained during the incident and was then transported to Montgomery Township Police headquarters for processing, officials said.

He was charged with second-degree aggravated assault, second-degree eluding, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, the office said. He was taken to the Somerset County Jail where he was lodged pending a detention hearing.

The circumstances which led to the stabbing are still under investigation but detectives said there are no safety concerns to the community.
