Man beat cellmate to death at N.J. county jail, officials say

A 29-year-old man beat his cellmate to death at the Camden County jail last week, authorities said.

Surveillance video showed Shaquan Shields, of Camden, repeatedly punching Edward D. Brooks in a cell shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Brooks, 42, of Newark, Delaware, was found unresponsive on his bunk at about 7:50 a.m. the following morning. He was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Shields is charged with manslaughter and remains held at the jail. He was jailed on robbery and assault charges in December, according to court records.

Four days before his death, Brooks pleaded guilty to an August robbery in Brooklawn, court records state.

The investigation into Brooks’ death is ongoing and authorities declined to provide additional information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Luis Sibaja, Jr. at 856-225-8682. Tips may also be sent to CAMDEN.TIPS.
