The only shop serving pizza by the slice in downtown Asbury Park has closed its doors for good after two-plus years in business.
Killer Pies, which was located at 649 Mattison Ave., announced its closing in an Instagram post Tuesday.
”You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, right? Although our vision fell short, we will never forget the last two and a half years and all the support and love that the community of Asbury Park showed us. It really was a hell of a killer time,” the post read.
The pizzeria served New York-style slices, pies, salads, desserts and sodas, and offered a late-night pickup window, contrasting the more upscale, Neapolitan-style pies of popular Asbury restaurants Talula’s and Porta.
“I would just like to thank anyone that helped and believed in Killer Pies from my investors to the employees to the city of Asbury and all the amazing patrons we met along the way,” owner Andrew Mahnken told NJ Advance Media. “Bringing a slice shop to Asbury Park was an ambitious undertaking but I still wholeheartedly believe in the concept and brand. Unfortunately, now just wasn’t the time. Moving forward, I am excited for other projects we have going on in the near future.”
Killer Pies occupied a brick-walled Mattison Avenue building which has seen several different food and drink operations open and close over the years. In the last 15 years, the corner lot has housed Trinity and the Pope, Bank on Mattison, Redemption and Skratch as well as Killer Pies, as noted by the Asbury Park Press.
Killer Pies posted an Instagram story yesterday of what seems to be its next project— a bar located in Nashville.
“When one door closes, another opens,” the since-expired Instagram story read. “Keep track of our next project @theasburynash August 2024.” Instagram stories expire 24 hour after being posted.
