Voters in New Jersey headed to the polls on Tuesday, June 10, to decide the outcome of a hotly contested primary election to determine which Democrat and which Republican in a crowded field will run for governor in November’s general election.
And it didn’t take too long for the winners to be announced.
Less than 20 minutes after the election polls officially closed Tuesday night, the Associated Press declared former state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli as the winner of the Republican primary for governor.
Shortly before 8:40 p.m., the Associated Press declared Mikie Sherrill as the winner of the packed Democratic primary for governor. That sets the stage for Sherrill to face off against Ciattarelli and five independent candidates in the general election on Nov. 4.
Voters also decided Tuesday who will get their party’s nominations to seek seats in the state Assembly, county offices and scores of local offices across New Jersey.
The results will be posted here and updated throughout the night as they come in from county clerks and from the Associated Press.

Despite a packed field of candidates on Primary Election Day 2025 in New Jersey, it didn't take long for the winners to emerge: U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (left) and former state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (right). Each won their party's nomination and will compete in November to fill the seat that will be vacated by two-term Gov. Phil Murphy.
N.J. governor’s race primary election results
In a rare political event, the 2025 primary election for governor was a very crowded race for both major parties, with six Democrats battling it out and five Republicans fighting for a nomination.
No incumbents were in the race, because Gov. Phil Murphy is finishing out his second term and isn’t eligible to seek another term under state law.
The unofficial results of the primary election for gubernatorial bids in the Garden State, compiled by the Associated Press, can be found below.
The Democrats in the primary election who lost to Sherrill were Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney.
The Republicans who were defeated by Ciattarelli were contractor Justin Barbera, state Sen. Jon Bramnick, former Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario Kranjac, and former radio host Bill Spadea.
The New Jersey governorship is considered one of the country’s most powerful, with the ability to approve state laws and the state budget, while appointing the state’s attorney general, judges and other important officials.
Key N.J. Assembly results in primary election
Here are the unofficial results of the most competitive state Assembly elections held on Tuesday. Some of these races have as many as four or five people from the same political parties running for two nominations.
The biggest contested primaries are in South Jersey’s 4th District, Hudson County’s 32nd District, and Bergen County’s 37th District. Democratic incumbents in each of those districts are facing challenges.
