The final chapter of “Squid Game” is almost here.
Season 3 of “Squid Game” consists of six episodes, according to Forbes. All six episodes are set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, June 27. Season 1 of the dystopian thriller series was nine episodes long, while season 2 had seven episodes.
Squid Game’s final season comes just six months after the premiere of season 2 in December 2024.
“I wrote seasons two and three back-to-back, [and] we filmed them back-to-back,” series creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk told the Hollywood Reporter in January. “The third season will really explore that sense of loss and failure, that guilt weighing so heavily on [Seong] Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). How’s he going to navigate the story further with all of that weighing down on him?”
Hwang initially didn’t want to make a second season of “Squid Game,” because making the first installment took such a toll on his physical and mental health.
“I wrote and directed and produced that whole season. It was torture. I mean, I lost eight teeth,” he told the New York Times in an interview published on Monday, June 23. “So, while I was shooting it, I kept telling myself and my producer, ‘This is it. I’m never going to do a TV series again. Not this way.’”
Hwang found the motivation to write two additional seasons, but now that “Squid Game” is coming to an end, he’s ready to “take a rest.”
“Then I want to do feature films,” he told the NYT. “I have an idea for my next feature.”

“Squid Game” follows a secret contest of the same name, where players risk their lives to win a massive sum of money. Dark and violent, the Netflix series is a critique of capitalism and wealth inequality.
Despite creating the bleak world of “Squid Game,” Hwang told the NYT that he is “trying not to lose hope” for a better future.
“The world forces us to become more sarcastic, more cynical. But like Gi-hun, I am trying my absolute best to stick to my conscience and maintain hope for humanity,” he said.
Hwang also hinted that the season 3 finale will provide insight into his views on humanity’s future. “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this month that he is “very nervous” to see how fans react to the show’s conclusion.
“I’m happy with how it ended, but I know that the fans out there, they each have what they want to see happen, so I really am curious about how they’re going to respond to it,” he explained.
Season 3 of “Squid Game” premieres on Netflix on Friday, June 27.
