Drunk driving crash in N.J. sends 1 to hospital, 1 to jail, cops say

One driver was critically injured and another was jailed on drunk driving charges after two pickup trucks collided Sunday afternoon in Gloucester County.

David Hewitt was driving on Little Mill Road in Franklin at about 12:55 p.m. when he went through a stop sign at the intersection of Swedesboro Road and struck another pickup truck, township police said.

The 34-year-old Clayton man driving the truck that was hit had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition.

Hewitt, 46, of Monroeville, was charged with assault by auto, driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended and other motor vehicle offenses.

He was being held in the Salem County jail ahead of a first appearance in court. Attorney information for Hewitt was not immediately available.
